This small fish thrives in complex, shallow-water habitats abundant with cover, typically from aquatic plants. With adaptations to diverse conditions, these hardy little rainbows can flourish in environments ranging from acidic, tannin-rich waters filled with leaf litter to clear, planted aquaria. Their resilience makes them ideal for small tanks with peaceful companions like shrimp, where they bring color and activity to the ecosystem.

These fish endure a wide temperature range, from 12-34°C, although it's best to avoid the extremes. Allowing seasonal fluctuations in water temperature can mimic their natural habitat, where changes in rainfall and dry spells affect conditions.

As with most rainbowfish, males engage in dynamic displays to assert dominance and court females. Providing visual breaks within the tank will help manage aggression, as will keeping them in groups to distribute social interactions. With the right setup, these fish largely ignore other species, focusing instead on their vibrant social routines, including frequent spawning.

Several similar species have been identified recently, and others await classification. Until distinctions are fully established, it’s best to keep named varieties separate to avoid unintentional hybridization. This fish is also known as Gertrude's blue-eye.
