The Serpent Loach thrives in clear, high-gradient streams with fast-moving waters, often located in mountainous regions. These shallow waterways are typically bordered by gallery forests, with rocky riverbeds scattered with large boulders that further accelerate the current. To replicate their natural habitat in an aquarium, it's essential to create a mature setup with strong water flow and plenty of rock crevices. If adding plants, choose hardy varieties. This species is lively, curious, and very social, so a group of at least six is recommended. Tankmates should be small, peaceful, and adapted to fast-flowing conditions.
Serpent Loaches are adept climbers, able to cling to various surfaces even in strong currents, often seen exploring or following each other in the tank. It's important to use tightly fitting cover slides with no escape gaps, as these loaches can "walk" up the glass. Like other fast-water species, they are sensitive to organic waste buildup, so regular partial water changes are necessary.
They can be distinguished from other Lao cobitids by a unique set of features: a short, rounded snout, short barbels, a small, vertically elongated black mark at the tail base, dark bars across the body, and horizontal black spots on the dorsal and forked caudal fins. Compared to related species S. cingulata and S. zonata, S. octozona has 7-8 dark body bars that are notably wider than the spaces between them and 90-95 lateral line scales.
Feeding
Serpent Loaches eagerly accept small, meaty frozen foods like mosquito larvae, daphnia, and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp. They also enjoy small sinking pellets, granules, and crushed flakes.
Breeding
This species has not yet been successfully bred in home aquariums.
