The Serpae Tetra is a stunning, shimmering fish species but is often criticized for its tendency to nip fins. This behavior can be problematic when housed with fish that have elaborate, long fins, so it’s essential to select tankmates carefully. However, the fin-nipping can be somewhat mitigated by keeping a larger group (10 or more) in spacious tanks equipped with ample decorations and plant cover to create "visual barriers." Despite this, fish with long, flowing fins remain unsuitable companions. If you admire the look of the Serpae Tetra but prefer a more peaceful fish, the Red Phantom Tetra is a great alternative, provided its temperature needs align with the other species in your tank.

Feeding

These fish are easy to feed and readily accept most food options. A varied diet of flakes, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like daphnia or mosquito larvae is ideal.

Breeding

To breed Serpae Tetras, introduce a well-conditioned pair to a breeding tank with soft water, a pH below 6.5, and plenty of live plants. Spawning typically occurs in the early morning, with the male chasing the female until she lays eggs that settle among the plants. Once spawning is complete, remove the parents to protect the eggs. The eggs usually hatch within 24 hours.
