The Featherfin Catfish (Synodontis eupterus) is found across diverse environments in the Chad, Cross, Kwa Ibo, Niger, Volta, and White Nile basins. This captivating bottom dweller showcases a unique coloration that evolves with age, as its intricate reticulated patterns transform into simpler spots. As it matures, the catfish also develops an impressive, fan-like dorsal fin with elongated, feather-like rays that add to its distinct appearance.
To keep Featherfin Catfish healthy, a spacious aquarium of at least 4 feet in length is essential, even for juveniles. A soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their long, sensitive barbels, and the tank should feature ample decor, including bogwood, rocky caves or PVC tubes, and sturdy plants, creating plenty of shaded spots. Leave a clear swimming area along the front of the tank for free movement. Given their active feeding habits, these catfish generate significant waste, so a strong external canister filter is advisable, along with consistent water changes to maintain low nitrate levels. A moderately strong current and well-oxygenated water are also ideal.
For lighting, subdued conditions are best, with blue-moon lights creating an optimal setting to observe their nighttime activity. Featherfin Catfish can be kept in groups, provided the tank includes numerous hiding spots and visual dividers. They often rest under decor in their characteristic upside-down position, a behavior typical of many Synodontis species. Be sure to use heater guards to protect these catfish from burns, as they tend to seek out dark crevices to hide against.
Choose tankmates carefully: peaceful fish over 5 cm (2 inches) are ideal, as smaller fish may be seen as prey. Suitable companions include medium-sized tetras, barbs, gouramis, knifefish, larger loricariid catfish, rainbowfish, or robust West African cichlids. Avoid pairing with aggressive Rift Lake cichlids from Malawi or Tanganyika due to incompatible water parameters and potential aggression. While Featherfin Catfish are readily available, they may not be suitable for smaller community tanks; for more compact setups, consider smaller species such as the Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris).
These catfish are sometimes labeled as Featherfin Squeaker or Featherfin Synodontis.
